Guardians of the Highway
The Story of Zalu and the Rhinos of Alzu Petroport
Nestled alongside the bustling N4 highway between Middelburg and Nelspruit, where travellers pause for rest and coffee, lies a sanctuary teeming with life, hope, and legacy. Alzu Petroport is not just a fuel stop, it’s a window into South Africa’s majestic wildlife and a living tribute to the power of care, protection, and purposeful conservation. At the heart of this thriving haven is the beloved white rhino family, and in particular, a spirited young calf named Zalu.
Meet Zalu — A Little Giant with a Great Legacy
Zalu is no ordinary rhino. Born into the heart of Alzu’s carefully nurtured conservation program, he carries the strength of his ancestors and the love of a family that spans generations. His mother, Christy, a wise and nurturing 22-year-old, was part of the second group of rhinos welcomed to Alzu from a farm in the Thabazimbi district. Christy is a symbol of resilience and maternal grace, Zalu is her third calf, and her instincts shine through in every nudge and protective glance. Zalu’s father, Sebastian, is a striking five-year-old bull with presence and poise. He, too, was born under the care of Alzu’s expert team, the son of the legendary Tony, a robust and much-loved male who hailed from Sheldrake Farm in Musina. Though Tony passed in January 2023, his legacy lives on in his grandson, who charges through the veldt with playful strength, watched over by Christy’s ever-watchful eye.
A Sanctuary in Sight — Not in Secret
Alzu Petroport’s location next to the N4 is a blessing. High visibility, constant foot traffic, and 24/7 security presence mean these animals live in one of the safest and most closely monitored environments imaginable. The rhinos, along with eland, buffalo, ostriches, and other wildlife, are under the continuous protection of expertly trained security guards, who monitor the grounds day and night. Surveillance systems, secure fencing, and dedicated wildlife staff form an impenetrable wall of safety around these animals.
But protection goes beyond cameras and patrols. It lives in the heart of the Alzu family, a team deeply committed to the well-being of every animal that roams their grassy plains. From veterinarians to feeders, conservation managers to groundskeepers, every member of the Alzu team carries the mission forward with tireless energy and love. We now also offer the opportunity for anyone who visits Alzu Petroport,
Well-Fed, Well-Loved, and Well-Guarded
Rhinos like Zalu are not only protected, they are celebrated. Watching Christy and Zalu graze peacefully, you’ll witness a family not just surviving, but flourishing.
Visitors often remark on the beauty of seeing such majestic creatures up close, and it’s this exposure that makes Alzu’s anti-poaching stance so powerful. The site’s openness is its strength, not a vulnerability. Here, the community becomes the protector. With thousands of eyes watching daily, and a professional team behind the scenes, the chance for harm is negligible.

To the Alzu family, these animals are more than attractions, they are kin. Every birth is a celebration. Every loss, a heartfelt mourning. Every new generation is a victory in a larger battle against extinction and cruelty. With partnerships supporting national anti-poaching efforts, Alzu serves as a living testament that conservation can coexist with accessibility.
The protection of our rhinos is more than a mission — it’s a calling woven into the very fabric of who we are. For those who share our passion for protecting these gentle giants, we warmly invite you to join us in the cause. Children who grow up seeing Zalu from the roadside may one day be the leaders who protect his descendants. That’s the ripple effect Alzu strives to create, one rhino at a time.
In Zalu’s Footsteps
As Zalu grows, so too does the dream he represents. He is a link in a golden chain, one that began with Tony in Musina, was nurtured by Christy from Thabazimbi, and now thrives in the heart of Mpumalanga. His playful gallops, curious sniffs, and fierce little charges are not just adorable; they are a sign of hope, proof that with care, commitment, and community, we can write a new story for rhinos in South Africa.
So, next time you’re driving along the N4, take a moment to stop, breathe, and meet Zalu and his family. You’ll leave with more than fuel in your tank, you’ll carry a piece of something powerful: a story of protection, love, and legacy written on the African plains.
