Now, there’s an even more exciting reason to visit. 

We’re proud to introduce Joey, the newest addition to our rhino family. 

Joey was born to Mafunyane, our 20-year-old white rhino cow, and is her third calf at Alzu. Full of curiosity and playful energy, this little rhino has already become a favourite among visitors and our team alike. You’ll often spot him exploring his surroundings, staying close to his mother, or entertaining guests with his inquisitive personality. 

Joey’s name carries a special meaning. He was named in honour of the late Johan van Rensburg, affectionately known as “Jo” or “Joey,” who managed Alzu Petroport for many years. His passion, leadership, and dedication helped shape Alzu Petroport into the unique destination it is today. Naming our newest rhino after him is a heartfelt tribute to his lasting legacy. 

Joey also joins his cousin, Zalu, another much-loved young rhino who has captured the hearts of countless travelers over the years. Together, they represent the future of Alzu Petroport’s ongoing commitment to wildlife conservation. 

Committed to Rhino Conservation 

Behind every healthy rhino at Alzu Petroport is an incredible team dedicated to protecting one of Africa’s most endangered species. 

During July 2026, we had the privilege of working alongside highly skilled veterinarians, conservationists, groundskeepers, our dedicated staff, and the relevant state authorities to safely dehorn our rhinos. While it is always heartbreaking to remove a rhino’s horn, dehorning remains one of the most effective ways to deter poaching and improve the animals’ chances of survival. It is a difficult but necessary conservation measure in the ongoing fight to protect this iconic species. 

The same conservation effort also saw several of our rhinos become heroes in another way. A couple of them served as blood donors for orphaned rhinos receiving specialist veterinary care. Thanks to their generosity, four bags of blood were successfully harvested, providing a vital resource that could help save the lives of vulnerable calves. 

At Alzu Petroport, conservation is about more than protecting wildlife within our own reserve—it’s about contributing to the future of rhinos across South Africa. 

Our rhinos enjoy one of the safest environments imaginable. The combination of continuous visitor activity, excellent visibility, dedicated wildlife management, and a 24-hour security presence create a highly protected sanctuary where these magnificent animals can thrive. It is a rare opportunity for travellers to witness one of Africa’s iconic species up close while knowing they are being cared for in a secure environment.
